#yegCupcakeChallenge: Fuss Cupcakes

Alright folks, it's time for round two of our #yegCupcakeChallenge!

For our second cupcake shop, we headed to Fuss Cupcakes with Meat Vs Veg reader Taylor, who is a big fan of Fuss (follow her on Twitter: @whatthedeuce23)

Fuss Cupcakes is proud to be the first gourmet cupcake shop in Edmonton, and have two locations in the city. We visited their Whyte Ave store, right next to the awesome Funky Pickle Pizza Co.
One of the great things about Fuss is that they offer ample seating for those wishing to enjoy their sugary snack right away. They also offer a large beverage menu of coffees, teas, and sodas to make your treat complete. Every week Fuss offers six standard cupcake flavors and six different weekly specials. Unique options such as "Salted Caramel", "Cloud 9" and "Creamsicle" make for a difficult decision!

Taylor went with one of the weekly specials, the Black Forest cupcake (all regular sized cupcakes $3.25), a chocolate cake with cherry filling and topped with their classic buttercream icing. She thoroughly enjoyed it and even mentioned that she had visited Fuss earlier in the week and had to come back for this same cupcake again!

Jackie chose the Coconut Cream Pie flavor, another weekly special. A vanilla cake filled with coconut cream and topped with classic buttercream and graham cracker crumbs, this pretty cupcake had great flavor potential.
However, looks aren't everything. She thought that the cake, while fine, was akin to a Betty Crocker mix. It seems like the icing was made with some sort of oil, as it felt greasy on the lips and didn't taste buttery. Normally she would be disappointed with the icing to cake ratio but with such oily icing she was grateful there wasn't tons of it! The presentation was a high point, as the frosting was piped well and the graham crackers added some interest. The filling was a nice surprise but didn't provide the punch of flavor she was looking for.

Steph has decided to choose the same standard cupcake flavor, red velvet, at each challenge location in order to fairly compare between cupcakeries. Fuss' version, the Scarlet O'Hara, was pretty standard: a red velvet cake base, topped with cream cheese icing and crowned with a white chocolate disc.

Sadly, the icing here was just as greasy as Jackie's despite being cream cheese instead of buttercream. Fresh out of the refrigerated case it was very noticeable, so a warmed up cupcake would be almost inedible for those opposed to oily frosting. The cake was quite good, moist and large with nice flavor. Overall the cupcake was quite pretty to look at, the addition of pink frosting was a nice touch, but again the presentation was nothing spectacular.

Total: 14.5/30

We were quite disappointed with Fuss Cupcakes. They've been in the business for a long time, have a great location and friendly staff, but they cupcakes themselves were a let down.

Here are the standings thus far, it looks like Crave has a significant lead! Come back next week for even more cupcake drama!
